Las Tintoreras Tour Itinerary: What to Expect

Discover Las Tintoreras: Wildlife, Simplicity, and Proximity

Welcome to one of the most captivating experiences in the Galápagos. This unforgettable excursion to Las Tintoreras invites you to discover an extraordinary concentration of marine life in the crystal-clear waters just off Isabela Island—one of the archipelago’s most biodiverse and visually striking landscapes.

Just minutes from Puerto Villamil, this short and easily accessible tour offers an incredible opportunity to encounter iconic Galápagos species in a protected natural nursery, recognized as a Ramsar site.

Your journey begins in town, where we’ll meet at our office 30 minutes before departure for a smooth gear fitting. From there, a short transfer takes you to the pier, followed by a calm 15-minute navigation across the bay. Along the way, you may already spot Galápagos penguins resting on the rocks or moving swiftly through the water.

Walk, Observe, and Snorkel in a Natural Sanctuary

Upon arrival, you’ll explore a series of volcanic islets shaped by ancient lava flows. Marine iguanas bask in the sun along the trails, often blending seamlessly into the dark rock formations.

One of the highlights is the narrow lava channel where white-tip reef sharks—locally known as “tintoreras”—rest in shallow, protected waters. Observing them from land offers a rare and fascinating perspective on their natural behavior.

The experience continues in the water, where you’ll snorkel in a calm, sheltered area surrounded by volcanic formations. This natural pool provides ideal conditions to observe sea turtles, rays, reef fish, and even marine iguanas feeding underwater.

A Unique Concentration of Iconic Galápagos Wildlife

Las Tintoreras is home to an impressive variety of species, including white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, Galápagos penguins, marine iguanas, rays, tropical fish, and coastal birds—all within a remarkably compact area.

Beyond its beauty, this site plays an essential role as a nursery and refuge for endemic marine life. With every visit, your experience also contributes to ongoing local efforts focused on restoring and protecting the surrounding reef ecosystems—helping to preserve this fragile environment for future generations.

We traveled to Isabela to fulfill our 84 year old fathers dream of seeing Penguins
We knew this would be a challenge as he struggles with mobility and the Galapagos is composed of uneven volcanic rocks and trails. The crew even took him over to photograph the penguin while we did our snorkeling!

I had a wonderful time booking a trip with Agora Tours.
I saw many different views and wildlife and the tour guides were great and friendly

Great half-day trip!
We saw lots of animals - blue-footed boobies, turtles, penguins, white-tipped sharks, baby marine iguanas, etc. Lovely way to spend the morning of our first day on Isabella.

Your Visit Supports Reef Restoration in the Galápagos

Beyond the experience itself, your visit to Las Tintoreras contributes to something much bigger.

These waters are not only home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife—they are also part of a fragile marine ecosystem that has faced significant challenges in recent decades. Repeated El Niño events have caused widespread coral loss across the Galápagos, severely impacting reef structures that once supported a rich diversity of marine life.

Today, ongoing local efforts focus on restoring these reef habitats and strengthening the resilience of the surrounding ecosystem.

With every guest who joins this tour, a portion of the experience directly supports these restoration initiatives in the Tintoreras area. This means that your time in the water is not only about observing this unique environment—but also about helping to protect and rebuild it.

Healthy coral ecosystems are essential because they:

Provide habitat and shelter

For a wide range of marine species, from reef fish to juvenile sharks reefs are essential

Support Biodiversity

By sustaining complex food webs in coastal waters

Protect coastlines

By reducing wave energy and erosion

Strengthen ecosystem resilience

In the face of climate events like El Niño

Kayaking Tour
Since kayaking is non-motorized, it is a very wildlife-friendly way to visit Los Tintoreras. It is the best choice if you would like more time and better chances to observe the penguins. You can get closer and enjoy plenty of time for photos. Groups are smaller, with a maximum of 8 guests per tour, creating a more intimate experience. After kayaking, you will snorkel with the guide. When you return to the beach, we will take you to Concha Perla (part of the Tintoreras area), which is a public snorkeling site you can also visit independently at any time. Here you have the chance to see sea lions, iguanas, reef sharks, rays, turtles, and sometimes penguins as well.

Boat Tour
On the boat tour, groups are larger, with a maximum of 16 guests. You will travel by boat to look for penguins and then visit the islet for a short walk. Afterwards, you will snorkel at a site that is only accessible by boat. In the channel, you have a good chance of reef sharks, sea lions, turtles, rays, and a wide variety of fish. This is the most accessible option on the island and is especially suitable for families with young children, seniors, or guests with limited mobility.
