North Seymour & Plaza Day Tour Itinerary: What to Expect

One of the Best Birdwatching Experiences in the Galápagos

Your day begins in Puerto Ayora, where you’ll meet your guide and travel across the lush highlands of Santa Cruz toward the Itabaca Channel. Along the way, the landscape transforms dramatically—from green scalesia forests and farmland to the arid coastal environments that characterize much of the Galápagos.

Upon arrival at the channel, you’ll board the excursion yacht and begin with a scenic navigation across the open ocean toward North Seymour Island, a destination widely regarded as one of the finest birdwatching sites in the Galápagos. As the island appears on the horizon, anticipation builds for an experience that places you directly inside one of the archipelago’s most active seabird breeding colonies.

Upon landing, follow a trail through a landscape where wildlife is everywhere. Blue-footed Boobies perform their famous courtship dances only a few meters away, while Magnificent and Great Frigatebirds soar overhead and males inflate their striking red gular pouches during breeding season. The island’s open terrain and sparse vegetation provide exceptional visibility, creating outstanding opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

Beyond its remarkable birdlife, North Seymour is also home to Galápagos Land Iguanas and sea lions that can often be seen resting near the shoreline. Every section of the trail offers a new wildlife encounter, making this one of the most rewarding walks in the Galápagos for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts alike.

Snorkeling at North Seymour with Reef Sharks, Rays & Colorful Marine Life

After returning to the yacht, enjoy a refreshing snack before continuing the adventure beneath the surface.

The waters surrounding North Seymour offer excellent snorkeling opportunities, revealing a vibrant marine ecosystem that contrasts beautifully with the island’s dry landscape above. Depending on conditions, you’ll enter the water along the island’s rocky coastline, where schools of tropical fish move through the currents and marine life thrives among volcanic formations.

White-tip reef sharks are frequently observed resting on the seafloor, while rays may glide gracefully through the deeper waters. Sea turtles are also occasionally encountered, adding another memorable element to the experience. With good visibility and abundant marine life, this snorkeling session provides an exciting glimpse into the underwater world that makes the Galápagos so extraordinary.

After snorkeling, return on board to enjoy lunch as the yacht continues toward South Plaza Island.

South Plaza Island Walk Among Sea Lions, Iguanas & Coastal Cliffs

Your second visitor site is South Plaza Island, one of the most wildlife-rich islands in the Galápagos and a perfect complement to the bird colonies of North Seymour.

Formed by geological uplift that raised the seafloor above the ocean surface, South Plaza is characterized by dramatic cliffs, rugged coastlines and one of the largest sea lion colonies in the archipelago. As you follow the trail, sea lions rest along the shoreline while others play in the shallow waters below.

The island is also famous for its population of Galápagos Land Iguanas, which are frequently seen resting beneath giant prickly pear cacti or moving through the island’s unique vegetation. Along the cliff edges, seabirds take advantage of the ocean winds, creating excellent wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the walk.

Combined with spectacular coastal scenery, abundant wildlife and exceptional photographic opportunities, South Plaza offers one of the most rewarding visitor experiences in the Galápagos.
