The Sulphur Mines

Sulphur Mines Tour

The tour to the sulphur mines is one of our absolute favorites! It will offer you a lot of action with horseback riding, biking or hiking. Apart from that,  you will discover on this tour the still active Sierra Negra and learn about the history of Isabela.

Discover Sierra Negra's Sulphur Mines

Join us on an unforgettable adventure to the otherworldly Sulphur Mines of Isabela’s Sierra Negra volcano. We’ll whisk you away from your hotel and embark on a journey through the highlands, following the footsteps of miners from days gone by. Arriving at the rim of the Sierra Negra, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view that spans from the southern to the northern tip of Isabela.

Sierra Negra's visually most active part: Short Route

Prepare for a two-hour guided hike into the heart of the caldera, where the landscape transforms from lush greenery to rugged lava rocks and further to whitish calcium and yellowish sulphur deposits. Equipped with a breathing mask for safety, you’ll witness the intense volcanic activity up close and learn how a reddish liquid becomes steaming yellow stone. Discover the island’s history before tourism became its mainstay, and savor a delightful lunch amid this extraordinary setting.

With three possible starting times (7:30, 9:30, and 11:30), you can choose a schedule that suits you best. Keep in mind that the national park requires pre-registration at least one day in advance.

Add a Thrill with Horseback Riding or Biking: Long Route

For those seeking extra adventure, we offer a long trail experience by horseback or bike. This option reduces the pickup truck ride from Puerto Villamil to the Sierra Negra checkpoint to just 20 minutes. From there, saddle up your horse or hop on your bike, which takes approximately two hours to reach the volcano’s rim or just 45 minutes by bike. Experience breath-taking views additionally to the same incredible sights as the short tour, while feeling the light breeze on your face.

Overnight Camping Experience

Opt for an overnight camping experience on Sierra Negra to fully savor the wonder of the volcano. After setting up tents, gather around a bonfire for an unforgettable evening beneath the starlit sky. As the sun rises, take in the vast ocean views and explore the neighbouring sulphur mines. The day ends with an exhilarating bike ride back to the checkpoint.
